Shoots Calendar - 2006 Archives

These are the events we organized and enjoyed during the year 2006. Usually, by following the discussion links, you will be treated to some examples of the photography the NEO Shoots participants created during the shoot. Further, the other links will be maintained here for reference should you ever want to venture out on your own in the future. Over time, we will build a repository of ideas and resources for active NE Ohio photo enthusiasts.

Winter Setting Shoot at Lanterman's Mill

photography courtesy of Tom Schwerin

In early September, the NEO Shoots group gathered to photograph at Mill Creek Metropark in Youngstown. A big draw was Lanterman's Mill, a huge old 5-story gristmill preserved by the Mahoning Park District. Tom Schwerin, our host, mentioned that the unheated mill holds its snow cap in the winter and all the windows are candle lit. The evergreen wreath is the frosting on the cake!

So - while the rest of the world spends their day off work madly exchanging their gifts, why not spend a late afternoon with us taking in this nostalgic scenery? We'll be stopping at Bob Evans for hot chocolate and a bite to eat.

This shoot will start at 3:00 PM. We will meet at a Bob Evan's nearby. Address of Bob Evan's is...

1038 N Canfield Niles Rd.
Youngstown OH 44515
(330) 652-8211

Lanterman's Mill is located along-side Canfield Road (Rt-62) midway between Hopkins Road and Glenwood Avenue. We should arrive at the mill around 3:45 or 4:00 PM. Check the map links in this listing. Print and bring a copy of the map with you.

This scenery needs to be shot in twilight, not evening. By 5:30, the shoot should be over. Dress appropriately.

There is about a 1/4 mile walk from the parking lot. If it is icy, choose your footwear accordingly.

This is a family and friends event - you are welcome to bring everyone and join in the fun!

Lighting Studio Still Life Creations

OK, the weather is turning and it might be fun to spend a morning comparing notes indoors in a studio environment using studio strobes, seamless paper, reflectors, props, and imagination to see what ideas we can dream up to inspire still life photographs during the long cold months ahead. You will be back home in time for the Brown's game.

In anticipation of this, start collecting props and "whatnots" that you want to use for the shoot. How about preserving some fallen leaves, pine cones, seed pods, dried flowers, feathers, colored glass, old wood, antique items, whatever. It would be a good idea to gather some lighting modifiers and background materials.

How about bringing some distressed glass for a "Nancy Rotenberg" effect?

Use your imagination and "let it flow".

This is an indoor shoot in Bob Kulon's home. We have 4 Alien Bees studio strobes, flash meter, light boxes, reflectors, umbrellas, stands, seamless back drops, etc. This shoot allows us to put some creative sets together using simple props and lighting. Experiment. Everyone gets a chance to try ideas and shoot. We can probably have 2 sets going at once. We can preview results, live, on a digital projector that will be set up in the basement studio. (Bring your camera's video connection cable.)

The Golden Bogs of Kent Shoot

The Tamaracks are generally a luminous orange-gold this week at Kent and Triangle Bogs. We should be able to capture some creative scenics with this unusual habitat.

PLEASE NOTE THE DATE CHANGE. Since the Autumn foliage change is occurring earlier than normal this year, we have a better chance of capturing the golden Tamaracks a week earlier than previously scheduled. (Tamaracks generally change color about 2 weeks after the broadleaf trees.)

  • Now 11/5
  • Was 11/12

We're going to start this at the Triangle Lake Bog at 8:00 AM, shoot a while, and then drive over to the Kent Bog, ETA 9:30 AM.

Please confirm your intended attendance with an email to bkulon@hotmail.com.

Fall Excursion to Beaver Creek State Park

This natural area is touted to be one of the primo Autumn color locales in Ohio. We will meet at the Mill Pond, Gaston's Mill and Pioneer village area just below the Nature Center.

Dave Pickens, a local photographer, has graciously volunteered to guide us through the park. In Dave's own words...

"Most of our shooting will be in the Historic buildings and pond and Creek area. I have arranged to have all the buildings unlocked for those that want to work with some interior scenes. We have the trails along the Creek in both directions, a couple trails up over the hills, but they don’t offer many vantage points to overlook the area. I have a few spots that we will be able to drive to that give us a view looking up and down the creek. Also, we can get folks to the different Locks and then of course the Sprucevale end of the Park has some different looks so I see no problem in satisfying everyone.

I would consider most this more of an intimate Landscape than a grand Scenic but I am sure you will be satisfied. My shooting partner will be there also if some of the folks want to split in different directions."

Directions: Travel Route 11 south to the RT 7/267 Exit, left at end of exit, approximately 2 miles. You will be heading north on Route 7, you will see Beaver Local High School on your left and just past the school you will see Bell School Road on your right (it is between the High School and the Middle School Buildings). Right on to Bell School, travel approximately 1-1/4 Mile and you will see the sign to turn left onto Echo Dell Road. You will see signs for Beaver Creek State Park at all of these turns from Route 11.

Folks that sign up will be given Dave's Cell Phone number for route guidance as needed. For your questions, you can reach Dave directly by email to lightnin571@comcast.net.

Mentor Headlands Fall Dunes Shoot

Let's go back and see how thing developed over the year in this coastal habitat. We should run into migrating birds, decent weather, and unusual foliage at its annual splendor. There is even a possibility of hitting the annual monarch butterfly migration!

There is a fishing access road to the right (east) of the main park gate. If the main park gate is closed , you can use the access road to get to the Dunes.

Be prepared for harsh conditions (wind, rain, chill, sand, surf). If you have layered protection and the conditions are mild, you can always adapt. These same extreme condition present significant imaging opportunities if you approach them correctly.

We will meet at the NE corner of the parking lot, next to the entrance to the dunes preserve.

Harvest Moon Skyline at Perkins Beach

This year, on 10/7, we will have a dramatic Harvest Moon (99% full) (weather permitting). This is a Saturday evening. Here's the details:

  • Moonrise 7:09 PM EDT*
  • Sunset: 6:58 PM EDT*
  • Declination: the moon will rise in the east 75 degrees from due north.

If you stand on Cliff Drive, next to Perkins Beach, where we shot the Skyline pictures in July, the moon will rise right behind the Cleveland Skyline.

First time out we experienced a bit of fog/smog at sunrise, but the images were still dramatic. We decided to return when the harvest moon rises over the skyline. This date and location should do it.

We will meet on Cliff Drive as indicated on the map.

*Event time listed is translated to EDT.

Wyandot Classics & Cruisers Shoot (Upper Sandusky)

photography courtesy of Andrew Crow

For those interested in classic cars, this is an amazing opportunity to walk amongst over 500 or so shiny street cruisers, all decked out to the nines. This classic car meet is well established and has reached legendary proportions, culminating in an evening "flame throwing" competition. Now there's a photo op!

Andrew Crow, one of our original NEO Shoots participants, lives in town. (Upper Sandusky is actually 60 miles SW of Sandusky - see the maps.) Andrew will not be available, but suggests that our group of shooters meet and organize at McDonalds on the East end of Upper Sandusky at the intersection of US 30 and US 23. We can go downtown from there, but McDonald's is an easy to find central point to start.

This is a busy microcosm of humanity as the place comes to life. Smack dab in the middle of a bountiful harvest too! Catch the vendors in all their antics. This is great locale for walk-around "catch" shots, architectural details, and market basket still life studies.

We have blessing of the Market management as long as we come early and keep tripods out of the aisles after it gets busy around 9:30. Park in the rear parking lot and meet out front under the clock tower.

Mill Creek Park Shoot (Mahoning MetroPark)

photography courtesy of Tom Schwerin

Mill Creek MetroPark is a winding stretch located within urban Youngstown. It offers an extremely diverse range of scenic marvels. Tom Schwerin, a local photographer, has agree to show us around the venue. Depending on weather conditions, here are some of the possibilities:

  • Lanterman's Mill (5-story!)
  • Covered bridge
  • Cascade Falls
  • Old metal suspension bridge
  • Parapet Bridge, stone bridge constructed by WPA work groups
  • Wet Lands boardwalk
  • Fellows Gardens

Consider these important points...

Despite the scenic riches, this park is adjacent to a "rough" urban neighborhood. Also, parking is limited.

To address security and parking concerns, we will meet at a nearby Bob Evans for breakfast, assemble the group into a few vehicles, go in as a group, taking only the camera equipment we are prepared to carry. Leave nothing in the vehicles.

You need to be at Bob Evans at 6:30 AM.

If you are "cool" with this arrangement, join us!

Meeting Place: There is a Bob Evans on the north side of the intersection of Route 46 and I-80 (see map). When you get off the ramp turn left and Bob Evans will be on the left just across the entrance ramps for I-80.

Please confirm your intended attendance with an email to bkulon@hotmail.com.

Hale Farm Civil War Reenactment

Hale Farm & Village (2686 Oak Hill Road, Bath, Ohio) will host its annual Civil War Reenactment Saturday and Sunday, August 12 and 13. Over the weekend, more than 500 reenactors are expected to descend upon Hale Farm & Village, making it one of the largest Civil War reenactments in Ohio.

These Civil War enthusiasts will establish an encampment, and recreate several days in the lives of two Civil War battalions, their families, and other accompanists. They will spend their time preparing meals – as would have been done at a Civil War-era campsite – tending to their uniforms and weapons, and preparing for their next battle. Visitors can mingle with the reenactors, who will share information on their lives and times as well as their clothing, their articles of war, and what the daily grind was like for a Civil War combatant.

At 2:00 p.m. each day, the muskets and cannon fire (and Canon and Nikon fire) will disrupt the tranquility of the north pasture at Hale Farm & Village. The battles will transform the grounds, for about 45 minutes, into a reenactment battle of the most costly and deadliest war fought on American soil. Admission fee.

Our concept is to arrive at opening (now 10:00 AM - this was originally listed as 8:00 AM) on the second day. This is an opportunity to beat the crowds and capture the re-enactors as they deal with the toil and soil of the previous day's battle. Rain? Mud? All the more realistic! We are looking for the "up close and personal" touch to the images.

Water Garden Shoot

photography by Jack Graham

We'll be at Tricker Pond Supply in Independence. The address is 7125 Tanglewood Drive. Tricker is one of the oldest and largest dedicated water garden suppliers in the country. Your exotic water lilies and lotus flowers are here folks. Bring a macro or a tele zoom with some macro capability and a tripod. A reflector and a strobe might help due to the angle of light. Don't forget bug repellant! Indoor ponds for annuals; outdoor ponds for perennials.

"I did receive the OK from the folks at Tricker's to come in and shoot the lilies. They don’t want us there when they are not opened. This is a slow time for them. They do require a consent form be signed saying that these images are not being sold to competition. They would also appreciate any images you would be kind enough to give them. They are nice folks."

Classic Corvette Meet Shoot

A last-minute photo op! This tip came from Carolynn Bennett. We're going to wing it here folks. Not sure who can commit to this or not, but certainly some of us will show up. There is no need to let us know of your intentions, just be there at 11:00 and we'll meet up.

This classic Corvette meet will be held at Corsa Performance Exhaust, at 140 Blaze Industrial Park in Olmsted Falls. Cars will be there starting about 11:00 a.m. and be there until about 3:00 or 4:00, Sunday.

Blaze Industrial Park runs South of Bagley in Olmsted Falls (or maybe Berea). It is about 1/2 mile East of Columbia. See the map link.

Beaches and Sunrise Skylines Shoot

This is a double-header. We're going to start "near" Perkins Beach, a small beach next to Edgewater that has great early sunrise views of the skyline. We plan this for 5:00 AM! By 6:00 AM the good light is over. Then, we'll pack it in and move west to Huntington Beach in Bay Village. Gates open at 7:00 AM. More skylines, sand patterns, athletic swimmers training, gulls, rock formations. If you still have any energy left, there is a waterfall and rose garden down the street.

IDEA: If the tall ships are in North Coast Harbor — and they should be — this should be a even more opportunistic shoot for those with long lenses.

Note: The Perkins Beach parking lot is not open at this hour. We will meet on Cliff Drive as indicated on the map.

Note - the time has been moved to 5:00 AM. I have verified that there is no light before then. That should make this shoot more appealing to participants.

Parking has been discussed with Cleveland Police, 1st District. (Thanks for calling, Carolynn!) They are aware of our presence. They told us to go ahead. If there are complaints, by the time they send anyone out to ask us to move on, we will be done with our shoot.

Parade of Sail / Harborfest Shoot

Why not take the afternoon off work? This is apparently the only time that all of the 12 tall ships can be seen on the water in full sail. We already have enough interest and this shoot is a go. Bringing a telephoto, polarizer, tripod, hat, sunscreen, and folding chair is probably a good idea. (It sounds like bringing a beast of burden would be a good idea as well).

We have identified the main deck of the William G. Mather Museum as having the best vantage point for this shoot. They are opening the main deck for a public viewing party. See the map link to the right.

NOTE: This event is on Wednesday. Originally listed as Thursday. That was an error. Sorry for the mix up.

At this point, we will be meeting at 2:30 PM in front of the ticket/registration gate to the William G. Mather Museum. Located at Dock #23. Gates open at 3:00 PM. The actual parade of ships is slated to begin at 4:30 PM. The parade will make 2 passes.

You must call the Mather Museum at once to reserve your individual ticket for their main deck access. The ticket is $10, charge accepted, tickets in will call at the gate. The phone number is 216-574-9053.
