Shoots Calendar - 2007 Archives
These are the events we organized and enjoyed during the year 2007. Usually, by following the discussion links, you will be treated to some examples of the photography the NEO Shoots participants created during the shoot. Further, the other links will be maintained here for reference should you ever want to venture out on your own in the future. Over time, we will build a repository of ideas and resources for active NE Ohio photo enthusiasts.

Holiday Celebration Dinner and Member's Show
We've been looking to build a tradition based on last year's successful NEO Shoots Holiday Dinner and think this is something that should have even wider appeal, easier to accommodate, and truly an evening of enjoyment amongst the friends that we've become as field companions. Here's your invitation to join us, with guest or without. Please act now - paid reservations have to be made in advance.
This year we will gather and dine in the Brecksville Room at Eddie's Creekside conveniently located in Millside Centre at 8803 Brecksville Road in Brecksville. (See www.eddiescreekside.com for more info.) The date is December 19, 2007. Doors open for cash bar at 6:30 PM; full-course sit-down dinner served at 7:00 PM; our member's "favorite photos of the year" show (digitals; projected) afterwards.
There are two facets of this you need to move on immediately...
1) Dinners must be prepaid. They are $28 complete, paid to me in advance (no separate checks except for cash bar).
- Price includes homemade rolls, fresh garden salad, entree, side, ice tea, coffee, soft drinks, finger pastries, tip, and tax. The whole ball of wax.
Each person chooses one entree from:
- Lemon Chicken - tender boneless chicken pan seared in lemon parmesan butter, served with rice pilaf and fresh vegetable.
- Baked Lasagna - seven later lasagna loaded with Italian Sausage, ground sirloin, mozzarella, provolone, ricotta, and parmesan cheese
- Vegetarian Stir Fry - special grill prepared to our dedicated chef's own recipe.
- Mail the $28 per person t: Bob Kulon, 712 Ledgerock Circle, Brunswick, Ohio 44212. I will send you an email confirmation.
- Indicate the names of the people attending and your email address when you send the money.
- Indicate what each person wants as an entree.
- Please have this to me by December 1, 2007.
2) We need as many of you as possible to provide your favorite 2007 photo images for the show. About 10 per person would be right. I will build the show beforehand - please don't bring a CD or thumbdrive to dinner and expect me to deal with that. I really encourage you to move on this and get active by showing your work. It's all good! Here's how to proceed...
- Prepare about 10-12 JPEGS of what you want to show in at least 1024x768 resolution, in SRGB color space.
- Burn a CD with these images and print your name on it
- Mail the CD to Bob Kulon, 712 Ledgerock Circle, Brunswick, Ohio 44212.
- Please submit this by December 1.
- I will send you a confirmation via email when the CD arrives.

Niagara Parks Butterfly Conservatory (Ontario, Canada)
We're going to visit the amazing Niagara Butterfly Conservatory in Niagara Falls, Canada. The NEO Shoots group will visit on Saturday November 10, at 9:00 AM when the doors open. Most of us are driving up early that morning. The reason for the early hour is that the butterflies are less active then and easier to photograph. Also, there are fewer visitors to contend with.
This magical attraction features over 2,000 colorful tropical butterflies floating freely among lush, exotic blossoms and greenery. Paths wind through the rainforest setting, past a pond and waterfall and the Emergence window, where butterflies leave their pupae and prepare to take their first flight!
|
A few things to be aware of:
- Tripods are not allowed so figure that into your strategy. Personally, I'm using a macro lens and a ring flash, but you can make other adjustments to the conditions to get by.
- You might want to review Michael Reichmann's online article at: http://www.luminous-landscape.com/1photo-pages/b/butterflys.shtml
- You will need some strategy to keep your gear from fogging up when you arrive in the moist warm environment. I suggest sealing it in a plastic bag until it warms up. Keeping it warm on the way might help too.
- Figure on meeting outside the facility just before the doors open.
- Does your cell phone support Canadian originated calls? If so, share the number with the group. Those that indicate they will participate will receive private phone list updates next week via email.
- If you have a passport, by all means use it. All though it isn't yet a requirement, I am told that it make re-entry into the US much easier.
You may be saying to yourself, "why would I drive all the way to Niagara Falls to spend a few hours shooting butterflies?" Perhaps that a good point. You didn't really think that was all we had planned did you? C'mon - this NEO Shoots. We get around. Here's more food for thought...
- We will be shooting other venues while we are there: possibilities include the Forts, the River and Falls attractions (day and night), old Niagara-on-the-lake, the Aviary, and a private access visit to one of the most esteemed wineries in North America (being confirmed - stay tuned). All of this is in the works. We will work out details and share them with those that indicate they are going. You can join the group or venture off on your own.
- We will be dining as a group Saturday evening. Stay tuned.
- We will be staying overnight Saturday. If you can, make reservations at The Quality Inn Clifton Hill, 4946 Clifton Hill , Niagara Falls, ON, CA, L2E 6S8 Phone: (905) 358-3601. This property is newer, located right in the midst of Niagara Falls Canada business district, about a block walk to the Falls and has free parking.
- If you are interested in car pooling, head over to the NEO Shoots forum and see if you can partner with some folks.
|
Please notify me ASAP if you will be attending and what your level of participation will be: bkulon@hotmail.com.

Autumn Wrap-up Shoot:
- Blue Hen Falls
- Sylvan Pond
These are two classic Autumn hotspots in our own Cuyahoga Valley National Park. Blue Hen Falls is great for the waterfall landscape, intimate scenic, and water reflections. Sylvan pond, if the wind cooperates, delivers the most vibrant tree reflections around.
Both of these sites are located west of Riverview Road.
- Blue Hen Falls is on Boston Mills Road about one mile west of Riverview. This is about a 1/4 mile inclined walk.
- Sylvan Pond is accessed through the Oak Hill tail head on Oak Hill Road about 1.5 miles West of Riverview. (Major Road connects Oak Hill and Riverview) Take the trail and follow the signs. This is about a 1/2 mile flat hike.
- Use the Map Link at the right for clear directions

(This is a commercial event
and highly recommended.)
Jack Graham and Bob Kulon team up once again to host a full weekend workshop of in-depth photography techniques within the natural areas of northeast ohio.
You have the opportunity to take Thursday as an optional day for this workshop. This is something entirely unique...
By special arrangement, we will be going to a Holmes County Amish farm for a wondrous day of nostalgic photography. We then cap off the experience with a catered Amish supper on premises.
|
This is the first of Jack's "Photo Classroom in the Field" series that takes a new approach to training.
Specifically, there will be time to really get involved with a venue and search out all its generally overlooked offerings with plenty of coaching support.
Additionally, Jack and Bob will hold breakout sessions in the field to train on specific photographic topics related to the scenes being experienced.

D-Day Conneaut 2007!
photography courtesy of Dee Riley
Last year we attended one of many Civil War re-enactments. This year we're "kicking it up a notch".
This is a full-scale major re-enactment of the WW2 Normandy Invasion orchestrated on the shores of Lake Erie.
Each autumn, history enthusiasts gather in the City of Conneaut, Ohio, to educate about the amphibious assault that was carried out against Nazi Germany’s “Atlantic Wall” in the Normandy region of France, June 6, 1944. Real US Navy landing craft pick up hundreds of WWII Allied reenactors, who are dressed in period uniforms and carrying the rifles and equipment of the day. These reenactors are then put ashore on a barricade-strewn beach similar to those of the French Coast. German reenactors, work to repel the Allied invaders coming towards their defenses on the bluff. These reenactors do their best to make this assault as educational and historically factual as possible.
Behind the bluff is an array of military displays, vendors, vehicles, and encampments from both sides of the war for the public to peruse throughout the weekend.
|
We will meet up for this event at 10 AM at Beef and Beer Restaurant for brunch before heading into the reenactment. This restaurant is located at the I-90 Conneaut exit (Rt-7). If coming from Cleveland, turn right onto Rt 7 and look at the top of the hill on the left hand side of the road. Great view of Lake Erie. (Events start at 8:00 AM but the shore invasion is at 3:00 PM. 11:00 AM seems to be the time for the public to see anything.)
For specific information contact Dee Riley at riley@adelphia.net. Dee has graciously agreed to coordinate this event.

Zoar Village at Harvest Season
This pristine German agricultural encampment is waiting to give you bucolic images, inside and out. Get your sepia toners ready.
Founded by the German religious dissenters called the Society of Separatists of Zoar in 1817 as a communal society, Zoar today is an island of Old-World charm in east-central Ohio. Many of the German-style structures built by the Zoarites have been restored and are open to the public as Zoar Village State Memorial. Others are privately-owned, and serve as residences, shops, restaurants and bed and breakfast inns.
Visitors can experience the life of the agrarian Separatists by visiting the ten restored buildings (Number One House, Kitchen/Magazine Complex, Bimeler Museum, Garden House, Bakery, Tinshop, Dairy, Wagon Shop, Blacksmith Shop and Zoar Store), which are staffed with costumed interpreters and furnished with items made or used by the Separatists. Some buildings are staffed, others open by guided tour. Volunteers give craft demonstrations during the many yearly special events. |
Meet at the marked public parking lot behind the town square at 8:00 AM.

Sunrise City Skyline Shoot
We're going to start the Air Show day "above" Perkins Beach, a small beach next to Edgewater that has great early sunrise views of the skyline. We plan this for 6:00 AM! By 7:00 AM the good light is over. Then, we'll pack it in and get breakfast before the Air Show opens.
Note: The Perkins Beach parking may not be open at this hour. If so, we will meet on Cliff Drive as indicated on the map.
In the past, parking has been discussed with Cleveland Police, 1st District. They were aware of our presence. They told us to go ahead. If there are complaints, by the time they send anyone out to ask us to move on, we will be done with our shoot. |

Cleveland Air Show from the Flightline!
Last year, NEO Shoots reserved a sponsors box for 10 photographers along the airshow flightline - virtually on the runway, near center show, with no obstructions. We had a great time and were rewarded with glorious photographs, unobtainable in any other manner. This was, beyond a doubt, the best shoot of 2006.
This year, we doubled our ticket order. We have 20 seats in adjoining sections, A111 and A112. This is 10 front row seats and 10 directly behind. The date is Sunday September 2. Gates open at 9:00 AM. Show starts around 11:00 AM. Air Force Thunderbirds probably around 2:30 PM. |
Here's how we're doing this. This is fair to all...
- Some people have already expressed an interest. They have first dibs.
- Additional people are considered in the order in which your request is emailed to bkulon@hotmail.com.
- You may ask for at most 2 tickets. Your second ticket must be used in the second row. We want all photographers in the front row. The second row is good for your gear, your guest, or a photographer if that's all that is available.
- We will maintain a waiting list, in order received, because this is certain to sell out.
- Tickets are $25 each. You pay your own parking at the gate.
- If it rains, it rains. The show may allow you to attend the following day, but there are no guarantees. You pays your money and takes your chances.
- Once I confirm your reservation is confirmed, and not until, send us a check and a self addressed, stamped return envelope. We will provide you with an address. If we don't have your check by July 15th, we will move onto the next person on the waiting list. We don't have time for reminders.
- Ticket will be mailed out by mid-August. Be patient. The show doesn't distribute them until August.
- Plan on taking hundreds of shots. Last year we averaged about 500 shots each and a few people ran out of memory cards. Prepare with adequate memory (or film) and batteries.
Please confirm your interest in attendance with an email to bkulon@hotmail.com.

Mansfield Haunted Reformatory Junket
We're going to the big house! The legendary abandoned Mansfield Reformatory is an abandoned ancient prison that is now open to the public under controlled conditions.
IMPORTANT UPDATE
The fee for the Sunday morning shoot is $25 per person. Please read below for complete details |
This was the site where Shawshank Redemption was filmed. We are planning to arrange a nighttime ghost tour as well as a sunrise tour the morning after.
PLEASE READ THIS SPECIAL NOTICE
The NEO Shoots Photo Tour - Sunday morning - 8/26/07. The place will be all ours for 4 hours. We have booked the tour at a reasonable early hour for good window light (8:00 AM to 12:00 noon). We will be taken on a very quick orientation tour and then remain accompanied by the guide for the duration. (The society frequently does this for many groups.) The fee is $25 per person for the 4 hour stint, no group discounts. You pay as you enter, no prepayment. You will be required to sign a waiver that the photographs will only be taken for personal use, not commercial use.
This is probably the most exciting possibility one could hope for if you are looking for graphic scenic opportunities. Don't miss the ruins of Mansfield Reformatory Shoot if you are so inclined. |
Address is: 100 Reformatory Road, Mansfield, Ohio. See maps linked on the right for an idea of where this is located.
Meet in the parking lot at 7:30 AM so we can organize. There is no general admission, so don't be late - you will miss out.

Train & Boat Spotting at Wendy Park
photography courtesy of Kathy Nelson
Northeast Ohio's newest transportation photographic hot spot featuring trains and freighters. A one stop train and freighter photographers dream. Somewhere around 60 trains a day, freighters daily in season.
Wendy Park is a 22-acre park that runs along both the Cuyahoga River and Lake Erie in the heart of Cleveland, Ohio. It’s home to a variety of animals - barn swallows, blue heron, turtles, deer and even some coyotes – to name a few. The wildlife share this beautiful space with boaters, kayakers, jet skiers, fishermen, volleyball players, hikers, bikers, bird watchers, and even the occasional train watcher.
Wendy Park’s green space stands out among the stone piles, warehouses and smokestacks that are part of Cleveland’s heritage. The unique and amazing bridges that span the Cuyahoga River are a wonderful backdrop for the cottonwood and birds that life the eye to the impressive downtown skyline.
The Park sits right at the water’s edge, and the spires of the city’s buildings loom gracefully on the bluffs above – exposing what many believe to be the best view the City of Cleveland has to offer.
One of Northeast Ohio's best kept secrets! Visit Cuyahoga County's newest attraction, Wendy Park at Whiskey Island. Step into Cleveland's industrial past, and into the "heart of it all", a richly under visited area of the city.

Summer Scenes at Beaver Creek State Park
photographs courtesy of David Caldwell & Dan Flocke
This park located on the eastern edge of Ohio was one of our most enjoyable jaunts in 2006. We're planning to return to concentrate on the wildlife and intimate scenery. The historical buildings are a bonus. Something for everyone and very well presented.
Beaver Creek State Park, in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, is one of Ohio's most scenic parks. The park includes Little Beaver Creek, a state and national wild and scenic river, and acres of forest wilderness. The rich history of the area invites visitors to explore Gaston's Mill, pioneer village and abandoned canal locks.

Pitcher Plants at the Bog - Kent area
Triangle Bog is home to the unusual carnivorous plants. Their blooms are most unusual and will be in full glory this time of year. Afterwards, we may venture over to nearby Kent Bog - home of the Tamarack trees.
One of the best examples of a kettle-lake bog in Ohio containing carnivorous plants, tamarack and a floating sphagnum mat.
Triangle Lake Bog is one of the finest and least disturbed sphagnum kettle-hole bogs in Ohio. The vegetational zone surrounding this glacial kettle lake follows the classic pattern of boreal bogs. |

Wildflower Fields of the Brecksville Reservation
Just 1/2 mile east of the Brecksville town square you find yourself immersed in and amazing array of wildflowers. Last year it was poppies and bachelor buttons (red, white, and blue). This year it looks like a profuse field of daisies was planted. Some of them have the look of Mexican sunflowers. Macro equipment workout time.
Currently, there is a dense field of emerging mixed daisies. As of 6/3, only a few deep yellow heads have opened, but all the remaining buds are huge and obviously very healthy. If this field pops this week, it will be a show maybe even better than the poppies were last year. These are not your normal puny little white asters you find here and there on the roadside. |
On the off chance that this field is not in full bloom, we will check it out first, and then if needed, move over to the prairie reconstruction adjacent to the Nature Center in Brecksville Reservation. There is some stuff in bloom there already.

Weather permitting, this annual event features scores of hot air balloons lifting off.
If the weather scrubs this event, we will try again on Sunday night 5/27. Either way, the same schedule is planned.
Note that the balloons take off from the practice baseball fields located behind the High School not the main baseball field.
Use the parking lot near the practice baseball fields. This is where we should try and meet at 5:30PM.
Actual Balloon Race starts at 6:30 and ends at 8:30. We're getting there early to get positioned. |

Gardenview: Spring Cottage Garden
Things are popping at Gardenview Horticultural Park in Strongsville. This is the time for the spring flora to be in full bloom. Bring your macro lens. There will be an admission fee of $5 to this private facility.
The Gardenview Horticultural Park is a unique public garden for several reasons. It was not created by a wealthy individual who gave their estate and a very large Endowment Fund with which to maintain it as a public garden. It was created by an individual who had no money, and who was inspired by the fabulous gardens in England and wished to create such a magnificent public garden here in the United States.
The emphasis at Gardenview is not upon providing lavish and opulent spectacle of architectural features. Instead the emphasis is upon extremely choice, rare and unusual plants... primarily those with variegated, golden or silver foliage... combined into attractive garden settings, in a natural, casual, cottage garden style... something which looks like it might just have happened by itself. Indeed, some visitors assume that it did just happen all by itself. |
Everything has been arranged with Gardenview and they are expecting us. Please confirm your intended attendance with an email to bkulon@hotmail.com.

Beaver Pond in the Mist
Cuyahoga Valley National Park is home to this much-loved nature area. This time of year is ideal for Spring foliage, misty morning scenes, and the sighting of wildlife. Meet at the Ira Road Trailhead parking lot.
The photo possibilities are numerous this time of year...
- An emerging wild iris field (expect mud)
- Snapping turtles sunning themselves in family clusters
- Families of ducks including the cute little newborns
- Sly beavers scurrying about
- Migratory birds in the trees
- Wild flowers
- Misty canal scene with foliage
- Scenic marsh landscapes
- Maybe even a hungry heron hunting for a protein snack
You need to get there early. For those of you that haven't been through this area before, I will guide you into the main areas at 7:00 sharp. We can't wait for stragglers. Most of the decent light vanishes by 9:00 AM unless there are clouds. I'll point out the canal scene, the iris fields, the turtle logs, the duck hangouts, the heron hunting ground and the scenic board walk. After that you need to choose your favorites and have at it.
Bring lenses from normal to long tele (but be prepared to carry your stuff a 1/2 mile or more). Also consider close-up gear. You need a sturdy tripod to get exceptional results. If it is drizzling, the shoot is on. If there is a downpour, I will cancel and reschedule.
|
This is a nature lover's delight. Very rich possibilities and enjoyable. Just the walk down the path and boardwalk is a delight. This is considered the jewel of Cuyahoga Valley National Park. Join us.

Nesting Heron Rookery - Cuyahoga Falls
On the south edge of Cuyahoga Valley National Park is an intriguing Heron Rookery. Every Spring, the amazing Great Blue Herons put on a show with their nest-building rituals.
The park’s riverine and wetland habitats support many different bird species. Great blue herons, not known to nest in the park before the 1980s, now raise young in two heronries within or adjacent to the park boundary. Starting in April, visitors can observe herons carting sticks to repair or build nests at two sites along the Cuyahoga River north of Route 82 and just south of Bath Road. Heron nest monitoring has found hundreds of nests perched high above the river and filled with squawking, awkward young from May to July. |

Hocking Hills "Shoot the Hills" Junket
photography courtesy of Ron Skinner
We are planning a trip to Hocking Hills for some glorious scenery. This is scheduled during the prime Spring season, at the time of the annual "Shoot the Hills" photography event.
These dates have been confirmed with the "Shoot The Hills" event organizers.
NEO Shoots is establishing a "headquarters" in the State Cabin area. We will have a digital projector and screen for gawking and talking each evening.
If this appeals to you, we suggest you go to the discussion linked on the right to find out how to arrange your cabin nearby (parking is limited).
If you plan to go, the time to move on these reservation is now! |
Let's plan on meeting at headquarters cottage #23 (amongst the state cottages at the cul de sac) each evening at 8:30, after sunset, for some conversation, planning, and viewing of the photos we are working on.
Cell phone coverage is nil in most areas of Hocking Hills. We do have several powerful little sport radios available that might help people coordinate while shooting. Channel 7 - full power. Ask to borrow one of these, and leave it turned on.
Please confirm your intended attendance with an email to bkulon@hotmail.com.

Founded in 1869, Lake View Cemetery sits on 285 acres of land and was modeled after the great garden cemeteries of Victorian England and France. Offering the beauty, serenity, selection, history, horticulture and architecture rarely found in other cemeteries. |
We will be meeting up at Daffodil Hill, located, more or less, in the center of Lakeview. The map link to the right has been annotated to show where this is

"Hooky" Shoot at Cleveland Auto Show
It is amazing what images you can create walking around the Cleveland Auto Show when the crowds are thin and you have some room to work. If you have good technique, you can even get away with minimal equipment to make the experience all the more enjoyable.
This shoot is on a Monday, when the show opens. If you can take a day off work, this is a great opportunity for mid-winter creativity when the pickings are slim.
Details to be posted closer to the event. Please return.

Hocking Hills Winter Ice Junket
photography courtesy of Dee Riley
By popular demand, we are planning a scouting trip to Hocking Hills to get the lay of the land and enjoy some of the famous ice formations. This is predicted to be an idea time for this by Eric Hoffman, a local pro.
This would be a great time to get your bearings for the upcoming Shoot The Hills event (4/20-4/22).
NEO Shoots has establishing a "headquarters" in the State Cabin area (cabin #23).
If this appeals to you, we suggest you go to the discussion linked on the right to find out how to arrange your overnight cabin nearby (parking is limited).
If you plan to go, the time to move on these reservation is now! |
More details to be posted closer to the event. Please return.

Portrait Posing & Lighting — by special request!
So many people have asked for training on portrait posing and lighting that we asked Dale Kincaid to volunteer his time to show us the basics. We'll get together a small group for a couple of hours to gather around a live studio set in Bob Kulon's home to get explanations on classic lighting and posing techniques. This is not a shoot, there is no need to bring your camera.
You will hear the explanation, see the results in the modeling lights, then see the image outcome as the digital camera feeds a large-screen projector. This is the first time NEO Shoots has ever done anything instructive, but we feel the subject matter requires specialized knowledge. Who know's what you will be inspired to do from here?
Dale has been a great teacher of these techniques and we are delighted to have him volunteer his time to be with us.
This session will be limited to the first 10 people that notify Bob Kulon. Once the list is filled, we will take "waiting list" names. If you must cancel, please make this known so someone can take your place.
The early bird catches the worm!
At this point, the roster is full. If you want to be added to the standby list, we will accept names in order received in case anyone has to cancel. |
Please confirm your intended attendance with an email to bkulon@hotmail.com.

Princess Ledges Ice Formations
This little-known gem lies in Brunswick Hills. It is now a maintained Medina County Metropark that offers some legendary ice flows over the ledges.
The Princess Ledges Nature Preserve has been known as the Strongsville Heights Allotment since the 1920s when the area was subdivided to create summer cottage lots. The difficult financial times of the late 20s slowed the sale of the properties to the point that many were given away as prizes at movie theaters. The existence of sandstone just below the surface made the lots difficult to develop. The park district has been acquiring land for this nature preserve since 1973. The name given to the area comes from one of the previous owners of the property. His daughter, named Princess, liked to play on the sandstone ledges, thus the name "Princess Ledges." These beautiful ledges become a fascinating sight in the winter as ice forms from springs flowing from the rock formations. |
Directions: Princess Ledges is located at the end of Spruce Avenue. Spruce Avenue runs west off Pearl Road in Brunswick Hills (but is poorly marked -- very cheesy street sign -- embarrassing really -- shame on you Brunswick Hills). It is just north of Grafton Road. Spruce Avenue is short. At the end is a new parking lot for the park. It holds about 12 cars. Park tight so everyone gets in. Refer to the vicinity map link to get you bearings.

Full Moon over Snowed-in Hinckley Lake
Imagine the glisten of the snow-covered lake in the moonlight. There are several possibilities for photography...
- The obvious - the moonlit landscape across the lake. This work if there is a break in the clouds and you are prepared for a time exposure to suit. (This is not a picture of the moon, but a moonlit scene). Long lenses up to 400mm come in handy.
- Shoreline detail scenic shots during twilight. That's why we are starting at 4:30 PM. Lenses ranging from 18-200 mm can be used.
- Ice patterns and reeds in the little bay south of the peninsula. Not at the boat docks, but next to them. Very accessible from the parking lot. Again, come early and see what's there. Medium telephoto lenses work well.
Please make sure you dress for the weather. Covering hands and head is important when the wind blows across the icy lake. Also, make sure your foot gear is up to cold, snowy, icy conditions that may be present. |
