Shoots Calendar - 2008 Archives
These are the events we organized and enjoyed during the year 2008. Usually, by following the discussion links, you will be treated to some examples of the photography the NEO Shoots participants created during the shoot. Further, the other links will be maintained here for reference should you ever want to venture out on your own in the future. Over time, we will build a repository of ideas and resources for active NE Ohio photo enthusiasts.

Greater Cleveland Airshow on the Flightline

For the third year in a row we have booked front row seats at the air show. (We are now considered regulars and get first dibs at renewing our subscription). I have already ordered and paid for the 20 tickets and the will arrive around mid-August. Last year, NEO Shoots reserved a sponsors box for 20 photographers along the air show flightline - virtually on the runway, near center show, with no obstructions. We had a great time and were rewarded with glorious photographs, unobtainable in any other manner. This was, beyond a doubt, the best shoot of 2007.
We have 20 seats in adjoining sections, most likely A111 and A112. This is 10 front row seats and 10 directly behind. The date is Sunday, August 31. Gates open at 9:00 AM. Show starts around 11:00 AM. The Navy Blue Angels perform probably around 2:30 PM. |
Here's how we're doing this. This is fair to all. Please note, this has changed from last year – read it carefully!!!
- New this year - tickets are $27 each. That includes a $2 handling fee for me since almost no one includes SASE and I have to chase people.
- New this year - you must send you money in with your request.
- You pay your own parking at the gate.
- People are considered in the order in which your request and check is received. Mail to: Bob Kulon, 712 Ledgerock Circle, Brunswick, Ohio 44212. I must have your complete return mailing address, phone number, and email address.
- You may ask for, at most, 2 tickets. Your second ticket must be used in the second row. We want all photographers in the front row. The second row is good for your gear, your guest, or a photographer if that's all that is available.
- Your check will be returned if I receive it after the event is booked up with paying registrants.
- If you cannot make the event, we encourage you to find, on your own, a suitable photographer to take your place.
- If it rains, it rains. The show may allow you to attend the following day, but there are no guarantees. You pays your money and takes your chances.
- Ticket will be mailed out by mid-August. Be patient. The show doesn't distribute them until August.
- Plan on taking hundreds of shots. Last year we averaged about 500 shots each. Prepare with adequate memory (or film) and batteries.

Return to the Big House: Mansfield Reformatory, our 2nd incarceration
We're going back to the big house! (Does that make us repeat offenders?)
The legendary abandoned Mansfield Reformatory is an abandoned ancient prison that is now open to the public under controlled conditions. This was the site where Shawshank Redemption was filmed.
PLEASE READ THIS SPECIAL NOTICE
The prison will be exclusively ours for 4 hours. We have booked the tour at a reasonable early hour for good window light (8:00 AM to 12:00 noon). We will be taken on a very quick orientation tour and then remain accompanied by the guide for the duration. (The society frequently does this for many groups.) The fee is $25 per person for the 4 hour stint, no group discounts. You pay as you enter, no prepayment. You will be required to sign a waiver that the photographs will only be taken for personal use, not commercial use.
This is probably the most exciting possibility one could hope for if you are looking for graphic scenic opportunities. Don't miss the ruins of Mansfield Reformatory Shoot if you are so inclined. |
Address is: 100 Reformatory Road, Mansfield, Ohio. See maps linked on the right for an idea of where this is located.
Meet in the parking lot at 7:30 AM so we can organize. There is no general admission, so don't be late - you will miss out.
YOU MUST confirm your intended attendance with an email to bkulon@hotmail.com. No unannounced walkins or tagalongs.

Presque Isle Kites Shoot

photographs by Debbie Bice
This is a very unique opportunity for some fun summertime shooting. Presque Isle borders the Pennsylvania shore of Lake Erie.
On Saturday mornings a group of expert kiting enthusiasts gather to have a kite derby. We are planning to gather for this shoot on location at 10 AM.
From Debbie:
I have talked to several of the folks who own some very serious kites and they are looking forward to us coming to take pictures of their kites. They would like us to share our pictures with them if we would. They get to the location around 9am to start setting up but the wind doesn't really pick up until around 1pm.
Parking is limited so I will be there early and do a little biking until all the kites go up. I have attached a map. Take 90 East and take Presque Isle exit. At the stop sign take a left and just stay straight and the road turns into Presque Isle. We are at the area in between Beach 9 and Beach 10. You should be able to see some ground kites from the road.
This is a very weather dependent shoot. Ideal conditions are 6-12 mile an hour winds out of the West. You can check the weather on the Weather Underground site under the resource tab on NeoShoots. Keep your fingers crossed the weather holds out for the shoot because this is great fun. Debbie |
Debbie will also coordinate the event. Contact her at deb2015@aol.com for more details and to confirm your interest.

Volvo Graveyard Redux - The Spring Season

Once again, we have been given access to a private business in Rootstown, Ohio that repairs and salvages old Volvos. But that is just the beginning of the story!
We went there last year and were amazed at the hundreds a decaying, worn vehicles that were piled in graphic display. The photographic possibilities were endless. The cars are arranged in a multi-acre field with foliage intertwined.
This is a junkyard. We are given freedom to roam, but you must assume liability for your own well-being. The owners are very friendly.

Chagrin Falls Balloon Glow Shoot

photography courtesy of Ron Skinner
A balloon glow is the actual firing up and inflation of the hot air balloons at twilight, creating a dramatic effect against the darkening sky. This is a tricky photographic proposition, but can yield very artistic results. The balloons will be tethered - there are no distant flights, only lift offs.
This event will be weather permitting. The actual "glow" is scheduled for 8:30 PM at the Chagrin Falls High School. Let's meet up in the high school practice field where the balloons are being tethered at 7:30.

Hocking Hills Spring Weekend Shoot
NOTE: Rescheduled - this is a new date!

photography by Ron Skinner
For those of you who have never been to Hocking Hills here's some more information.
There are six major hiking areas in the Hocking Hills State Park trail system. Ash Cave, Cantwell Cliffs, Cedar Falls, Conkle's Hollow, Rockhouse and Old Man's Cave. Each trail area is unique in what it offers the hiker. Ash Cave is well known for its sandy recess cave and a waterfall that is notorious for freezing from top to bottom on colder winter seasons. Conkle's Hollow can be cool even on the hottest of summer days, Cedar Falls has some of the most beautiful trails surrounded by hemlocks and Cantwell Cliffs' amazing overlooks will take the breath away. The dark recesses and gothic style openings at Rockhouse are a unique design seen nowhere else in the area. And hiking along the rugged trails of Old Man's Cave has been a favorite of trail searchers the world around.
A great deal of planning and coordination has been taking place. By all means, visit the discussion forum (link is on the right) to get the latest information. |

Mill Creek Park in Spring
NOTE: Rescheduled - this is a new date!

Mill Creek MetroPark is a winding stretch located within urban Youngstown. It offers an extremely diverse range of scenic marvels. Depending on weather conditions, here are some of the possibilities:
- Lanterman's Mill (5-story!)
- Covered bridge
- Cascade Falls
- Old metal suspension bridge
- Parapet Bridge, stone bridge constructed by WPA work groups
- Wet Lands boardwalk
- Fellows Gardens (the meet-up location)
Consider these important points...
Despite the scenic riches, this park is adjacent to a "rough" urban neighborhood. Also, parking is limited.
To address security and parking concerns, we will meet at Fellows Gardens parking lot, 1/2-hour before sunrise. We will travel as a group, taking only the camera equipment we are prepared to carry. Leave nothing in the vehicles.
You need to be at Fellow Gardens parking lot at 5:45 AM.
If you are "cool" with this arrangement, join us! |
Please confirm your intended attendance with an email to bkulon@hotmail.com.

Sheldon Marsh Nature Preserve Shoot
Sheldon Marsh State Nature Preserve and contiguous wetlands comprise some of the last remaining undeveloped stretches of shoreline in the Sandusky Bay region.
This preserve is known to attract nearly 300 bird species and provides habitat for many kinds of wildflowers. Spring is one of the best times to visit the marsh. From the middle of April into June, the woodland floor is covered with blooming wildflowers.
Dutchman's breeches, cut-leaved toothwort and spring beauties are followed by trout lilies, trilliums, wild ginger and wild geraniums.
Spring migration brings a variety of neotropical and shorebirds to Sheldon Marsh. Before crossing Lake Erie these birds stop briefly to rest and feed among the lush vegetation of the forest. Along the barrier sand beach, numerous shorebirds are frequently seen searching for food at the water's edge. |
Located in Erie County, approximately 2 miles west of Huron on U.S. Route 6. Use the Rye Beach Road exit from SR 2 and proceed west approximately .5 mile to the preserve entrance. Parking, trail system and observation deck are available.
A 1-mile paved trail, accessible by wheelchair, leads from the parking lot to the barrier beach. Meet in the parking lot at 6:30 AM.
Please confirm your intended attendance with an email to bkulon@hotmail.com.

Lakeview Cemetery & Daffodil Hill
center photograph courtesy of Ron Skinner
A classic Cleveland treat enjoyed for eons! We'll visit the Wade Chapel stained glass, the amazing monument details, and the breath-taking hillside with 100,000 blooming daffodils.
Founded in 1869, Lake View Cemetery sits on 285 acres of land and was modeled after the great garden cemeteries of Victorian England and France. Offering the beauty, serenity, selection, history, horticulture and architecture rarely found in other cemeteries. |
We will be meeting up at Daffodil Hill, located, more or less, in the center of Lakeview. The map link to the right has been annotated to show where this is

Lanterman's Mill - Mill Creek Park - Youngstown
photography by Ron Skinner
Ron Skinner came up with a great last minute idea for this weekend...
Hi Everyone,
As a lot of you know Bob Kulon is having an exhibition of his photos at the Butler Institute in Youngstown this coming Sunday 2/24 so I thought that while I'm out in Youngstown I might as well try and get some shots of Lanterman's Mill and I figured some of you might want to get some photos of the Mill as well, so I've come up with another one of my "Spur of the Moment Shoots" at Lanterman's Mill on Sunday morning at around 10am.
If anyone cares to join me here's what I plan on doing:
- Get to Lanterman's Mill around 10am and get some shots of the Mill and the Old Covered Bridge and then maybe check out other parts of the Park. (Debbie keeps telling me to check out the Duck Pond.)
- Around noon either have lunch somewhere or head straight to the Butler Institute. ( Bob will be there from 1 -3 pm.)
- If the weather is bad, (rainy or a major blizzard) then the Lanterman's Mill shoot will be off and I'll just go to the Butler Institute for Bob's Exhibit.
|
If anyone would like to join me for the Lanterman's Mill Shoot email me at ras52guard-neoshoots@yahoo.com or post a message here or just show up at the Mill at 10am on 2/24
Lanterman's Mill is located in Mill Creek Metro park in Youngstown, here's a map of the park:

McConnell's Mill Winter Shoot
photography courtesy of Debbie Bice
IMPORTANT NOTE: THIS EVENT WAS RESCHEDULE IN HOPES OF HAVING SNOW PRESENT.
McConnell's Mill State Park, in Lawrence County, PA encompasses 2,546 acres of the spectacular Slippery Rock Creek Gorge. Created by the draining of glacial lakes thousands of years ago, the gorge has steeps sides and the valley floor is littered with huge boulders. A gristmill was built in the 1800s to harness the power of the water. The park is open from sunrise to sunset, year-round.
We will meet in the parking lot off McConnell's Mill Road that runs south of Rt-422 (see Park map linked at right).
The park is about 40 miles north of Pittsburgh, via I-79, near the intersection of PA 19 and US 422. |
Adjacent is the McConnell's Mill Covered Bridge. This is one of two covered bridges in Lawrence County, it was built in 1874 and is of Howe Truss design. A registered National Historic Landmark, the bridge is on state park land but is the property of Lawrence County.

The National Aviary - Pittsburgh
The National Aviary is America’s only independent indoor nonprofit bird zoo. Located in Pittsburgh's historic North Side’s West Park. The Aviary is home to 600+ birds of more than 200 species. Many are threatened or endangered in the wild. Our natural, planted exhibits allow visitors an up-close view of the bird world. From Pacific Parrotlets to Andean Condors, the birds represent nearly every continent, with a particular emphasis on rainforest and wetland habitats.
At the National Aviary, the wonder of nature surrounds the visitor. An indoor, accessible, stroller-friends facility, the Aviary brings visitors face to face with wildlife in a setting that allows guests to take in the amazing beauty of birds and watch as they eat, bathe, fly and play. It’s a place to become immersed in the music of songbirds, marvel at the nobility of eagles, cranes and condors, and be amazed at the antics of penguins, parrots, pelicans and more. |
This is entirely indoors, warm and slightly humid. Consider that in your preparation. Also, at this point, we have been unable to determine if tripods are permitted, so your strategy should be flexible.
This was a late scheduled shoot to replace the rescheduling of the McConnell's Mill shoot due to lack of snow. Based on the lateness of this, we will not attempt to compile a list of attendees.
